YardVis Field Note · No. 01
Your YMS Is Doing Its Job. That's Exactly the Problem.

Planned vs. Actual
A Yard Management System is designed to track what was planned. Appointments, gate arrivals, dock assignments, completions — the system captures the schedule and confirms when milestones are met.
The problem is that what was planned is rarely what actually happened. And the gap between those two things is where receiving operations lose time, visibility, and the ability to improve.
What the System Sees vs. What Actually Happened
| Planned | Actual |
|---|---|
| Appointment | Truck Arrived |
| Gate Arrival | Waiting for Dock |
| Assigned Dock | Dock Reassigned |
| — | Crew Redirected |
| Completed | BOL Uploaded Later |
| — | Completed |
The gap between planned and actual is where receiving loses visibility.
What This Means
The YMS is not broken. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do: track the plan. But the plan does not capture dock reassignments, crew redirections, or documentation that arrives after the fact.
When those events happen outside the system, they become invisible. They cannot be reviewed. They cannot be analyzed. And the patterns they create — recurring delays, bottleneck docks, documentation gaps — cannot be improved, because they cannot be seen.
Receiving visibility is not about replacing the YMS. It is about capturing what happens in the gaps between planned milestones — and converting that capture into operational intelligence.
About YardVis
YardVis captures the receiving lifecycle — from truck arrival to dock assignment to documentation — and converts it into weekly operational intelligence. It is not a replacement for your YMS. It is the layer that captures what happens between the planned milestones.
